Friday, January 8, 2010

Helloooo everyone,

Welcome back! I hope you all enjoyed your break! I have a few upcoming events and jobs to share as well as to update you on our meeting times.
Our meetings will be at the same time (4:30-5:30) and place (2nd floor CDM building) but a new day (Monday).
So! Meetings begin this upcoming Monday the 11th from 4:30-5:30 in the Academic Success Center on the 2nd floor of the CDM building.
Hopefully I’ll see you all there!

And, on a side note, I have recently “lost” my computer so my backup email list is a bit outdated. I apologize if you’re now receiving emails again when you’ve told me to remove you from the list. Please just email me again and I’ll update my backup list so it is current once again.

Also, if you have questions, I respond more promptly if your question is sent to my personal email address (kaayell@gmail.com). But, nevertheless, I’ll also respond to those questions sent to herCDM, just not as quickly.

Thanks!

SUMMER 2010 PAID SUMMER RESEARCH INTERNSHIPS FOR UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS
via CRA-W/CDC DREU
(DREU was known as the DMP from 1994-2008)
Application Deadline  February 15, 2010
The CRA-W/CDC Distributed Research Experiences for Undergraduates (DREU) Program matches promising undergraduates with a faculty mentor for a summer research experience at the faculty member’s home institution.
The objective of the DREU is to increase the number of women and students from underrepresented groups entering graduate studies in the fields of computer science and engineering.  The DREU experience is invaluable for students who are considering graduate school, providing them with a close-up view of what graduate school is really like and also increasing their competitiveness as an applicant for graduate admissions and fellowships.
Funding for the student consists of $6000 for the summer (10 weeks), plus relocation travel assistance when appropriate.  Additional funds may be available to support student conference travel, either during the summer or afterward, and for outreach activities promoting the DREU.
An on-line Application for students and faculty mentors, more information about DREU, and webpages authored by previous participants are available at:
Application Deadline: February 15, 2010
Awards Announced: mid-March 2010
Notes for faculty mentors regarding the DREU Program:
* Cost sharing by faculty mentors is encouraged. The number of students interested in the DREU program has increased substantially over the last several years. To enable more students to participate, faculty are now encouraged to provide funds to support (partially or fully) students; the DREU will provide travel support for all students.
* All interested faculty are eligible to be DREU mentors. All interested faculty are encouraged to apply as mentors. Nonetheless, based on the documented benefits of role models with similar gender or from similar demographic groups, it is anticipated that DREU funds will mostly be used to support students matched with mentors from groups underrepresented in computing. Hence, other mentors applying should attempt to provide full funding for their students’ stipends (the program will provide travel support).
For more information about the DREU, consult the DREU webpages
or contact the DREU Co-Directors at dreu@cse.tamu.edu
Nancy Amato, Professor, Texas A&M University Co-Director, Distributed Research Experiences for Undergraduates (CDC)
Tracy Camp, Professor, Colorado School of Mines Co-Director, Distributed Research Experiences for Undergraduates (CRA-W)

The Computing Research Association (CRA, http://cra.org) is an association of more than 180 North American academic departments of computer science and computer engineering; laboratories and centers in industry, government, and academia engaging in basic computing research; and affiliated professional societies.
The Coalition to Diversify Computing (CDC, http://www.cdc-computing.org/) is a joint organization of the ACM, CRA, and IEEE-CS.
DREU is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation with additional support from AAAI, the Luce Foundation, and USENIX.

In the second part of a three-part public program series on the global economy, economist and author Steven Levitt will tackle a host of issues at the very center of modern society: terrorism, global warming, altruism, and more. From the rarefied corridors of academia to the grimiest street corners, Levitt lets his numbers speak the truth, asserting that a single mountain in the Philippines has had a greater impact on global warming than Nobel laureate Al Gore, while questioning common notions, such as the idea that terrorists come from poor families and are poorly educated. Inspired by engineers and astrophysicists, realtors and pimps, amateur historians and transgender neuroscientists, Levitt will examine the complex and often surprising nature of human behavior-delving into the hidden agendas of nearly every individual and the incentives that drive them.

TOPIC ABSTRACT: Why fight the web when you can join it? Prudence is an open source framework for building scalable web frontends and network services. It stands out from other web frameworks in that it is designed from the ground up to scale. It adheres to proven REST (Representational State Transfer) principles, which work with the web’s inherently scalable architecture, rather than trying to force it into other, limiting paradigms. Your Prudence applications can support rich clients (AJAX), thin clients (pure HTML), and happy mixes between the two, using the programming language of your choice among JavaScript, PHP, Python, Ruby, and Groovy. In this presentation, we’ll use Python to quickly create a fun web service based on Prudence. We’ll also go over some REST essentials, and see why REST is bringing internet application development back to its basics.

SPEAKER INFO: Tal Liron has been programming computers since he was 4 years old. He has recently founded Three Crickets, a software house specializing in massively scalable technologies, and is currently employed by crowd SPRING, an exciting online marketplace for graphic design. He is working on finishing a PhD in cultural anthropology at the University of Chicago, is getting certified to teach yoga, and is working on producing his original music. You know, just in case this computer stuff doesn’t work out.

From the conference coordinator…

The Midwest Women in Computing conference will take place at St.

Xavier - Chicago on Oct 9-10.   It is a conference that is geared to

women students, both undergrad and grad.  The emphasis is on

participation - posters, lightning talks, bofs…

The conference program in place is AWESOME, if I do say so myself (and

I may as well!) and we REALLY want a lot of wonderful women students

to come & participate and network and feel good about themselves as

computing majors.  Students can make posters on anything they have

accomplished or are in the process of accomplishing, they can present

5-minute lightning talks on a topic related to computing, the

profession, success in school, etc.  AND… they can have FUN!!!

Uncovering Successful Co-op Game Design Patterns

The CIM Visiting Lecture Series announces its third speaker for spring
quarter:

————————————————
Uncovering Successful Co-op Game Design Patterns
————————————————

by Dr. Magy Seif El-Nasr

Date: June 3, 2009
Time: 3:10-4:10pm
Location: CDM Room 222
Cost: Free

Abstract:

Designing good co-op games is an important topic in today’s video game
industry. When interviewing kids ages 8-12, we found that over 89% of
the kids interviewed play games with their friends or family at home or
at their friends’ home. Most new games, such as Left for Dead and
Resident Evil 5, have an added a co-op component to their game play.
While in the previous years, co-op game play was considered as a
secondary game mechanic, now games are designed with co-op components
from the very start of the design process.

This talk will discuss a study we conducted within and in collaboration
with Bardel Entertainment to gauge and identify successful co-op
patterns within existing games. The target market for this study was
North American kids 8-12 years old. We collected background information
for all subjects who participated in the study. All participants were
asked to come for a 3 hour game play session, where they played in a
group of 2-3 participants in a naturalistic setting. We collected video
data, as well as interview and observation data. We analyzed this data
to gauge user behavior correlated with co-op game design patterns we
identified. In this talk, I will discuss the results of this study
uncovering co-op patterns that lead to engaging game play. I will also
emphasize successful methods of data collection and analysis within a
game company, discussing business and legal challenges as well as
approaches that worked and those that didn’t.

Dr. Seif El-Nasr is an assistant Professor in the School of Interactive
Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University, where she directs the
